Your website is not the product

The website is the door. The system behind it, store, data, automation, is the house. Most businesses redesign the door and wonder why nothing changes.

Almost every conversation about a website redesign starts the same way: 'we need a new site.' Nobody has ever asked me for a better checkout pipeline. But in my experience, the checkout pipeline is usually the thing actually holding the business back.

A website is the surface where a business meets its customers. It should be well made, fast, clear, trustworthy. But it is one layer of a system that also includes the store engine, the customer data, the tracking, the email automation and the person who has to run all of it.

The layers nobody sees

When I audit a WooCommerce store, I look past the front page. I want to know: what happens after an order? Does the customer land in a CRM? Does the automation know they bought? Does GA4 report the same number the bank does? Most of the time, the answer to at least one of these is no.

  • The store layer, products, checkout, fulfilment logic.
  • The data layer, tracking, attribution, and one source of truth for numbers.
  • The automation layer, email, follow-ups, customer journeys.
  • The people layer, can the owner actually run the thing?

Redesigning the door is easy. The house is where the value is.

Where the actual work is

This is why I call myself a growth-driven web engineer rather than a website designer. The work is in connecting the layers: making WooCommerce write to the CRM, making the tracking trustworthy, making the automation trigger on real events instead of guesses. That's engineering. That's also where growth actually comes from.

None of this is glamorous. But a business that understands its own system, what sells, who buys, what happens next, compounds. A business with a beautiful website and no system stays exactly where it is.
